I celebrated a milestone birthday recently…and no, my lips are sealed…damn that sticky lip gloss…
To mark this special occasion, I decided to treat myself to a gift. I had no idea what it would be, but I knew when I saw it, it would inspire me, it would hit me like an Aston Martin DB10 traveling full tilt, bowl me over, and my mission would be complete.
I was out running errands, picking up a few things, and there it sat. Not on the display where it should have been…but left behind by someone, left behind for me to find. And like a bolt out of the blue, inspiration struck. This was it. This bit of fancy beckoned me, and yet I walked by. It called out to me like a siren’s song, and I kept walking. When the voice became a banshee’s wail, I doubled back.
I picked it up and tried it on, right there in the aisle, and then went in search of a mirror. Oh my, this was something special. I removed it and looked at the tag. The original Macy’s price was $64.00, along with a 30% off tag, making it $44.80.
The third price tag, this one from Ocean State Job Lot (yes, I said OSJL!) said $5.00. I’m not ashamed to say I frequent OSJL, where I’ve found some of my favorite things, like Just My Size knit capris, Sonoma knit tops (a Kohls store brand) and Haribo gummies, especially the cola-flavored ones. I was in shock, partly because this hat was drop-dead gorgeous, and partly because it was a steal.
Into each life, a little whimsy should fall and this piece of fine millinery from the August Hat Company dropped into my shopping cart with a mighty thud. It was a sign from above, and I knew I wasn’t leaving without it. Yes, I took that little beauty home.
It looks like the perfect fascinator for a royal wedding, though I haven’t been invited to one yet, and I don’t see it happening in the near future. But just in case, I’m prepared.
What touch of whimsy has fallen into your life?

Hey Craig – oh the trouble we could get into – you, me and an Aston Martin! I think the hat was a safer choice, lol.
